Ervin Bossanyi

Ervin Bossanyi (1891-1975) was born in Hungary of Jewish descent.  He was interred in France during WWI. After his release he moved first to Lübeck, then Hamburg in Germany where he became a notable artist and sculptor. In 1934 he left Nazi Germany for Britain, where he soon gained recognition as an artist in stained glass – the windows in Uxbridge Underground station are an early example from 1938.

The four Bossanyi windows in the Southeast Transept were installed in 1956-8. In 1959, following the completion of the windows at Canterbury, Bossanyi was engaged to design and install a set of new stained glass windows at the Episcopal Cathedral in Washington DC, a task which occupied him for a further 12 years.

Bossanyi died in 1975. At his request, his ashes and those of his wife, are interred in the Canterbury Cathedral War Memorial Garden.
